Boko Haram as the name implies is an Islamic terrorist group based in Borno, a North-Eastern state in Nigeria. Originally, it was founded by Mohammed Yusuf in 2002. The name Boko Haram which literally means ‘Western education is forbidden’, ‘Western influence is a sin’, ‘Westernization is a sacrilege’. They see that Western education corrupts the minds of Muslims. After the death of its founder in 2009, the sect appointed a new leader Abubakar Shekau which was the second in command to the late Mohammed Yusuf. Since then, they stop to follow the doctrine of the founder.
However, since the start of its insurgencies in 2009, the terror group have recorded successful attacks under the leadership of its new leader. It was declared a terrorist group in 2013 after several attacks. Statistically, over one hundred thousands of people have been killed by the group, and about two million people have been rendered homeless.
Politically, the group rose to serve as a destructive weapon but in pretense under religion. From my own perspective, Boko Haram are been use as tools by other politicians to distract the attention of the government. For instance, in a country whereby fighting corruption is one of the agenda of the president, do you think that the corrupt minds will be happy with that? They will use all what they have at their disposal to get what they want. I can remember vividly that back in the early 2000’s before the group turn wild in 2009, there was an allegation against Ali Modu Sheriff (The then governor of Borno state) of being the sponsor of the deadly sect. Though, that was before the 2007 election. He later denied the allegation.
The issue of Boko Haram, have reduce the economy of the country to ruin. The country’s economy is bleeding. Many foreign investors are in fear of coming to the affected areas to invest. The country is not 100% conducive again for foreign investors. Even the local ones are also in fear due to the high level of insecurity. There is reduction in products patronage from the Northern side of the country. The economic and commercial activities have been destroyed by the sect. People are migrating, relocating their businesses to other parts of Nigeria. The diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and other countries of the world have been paralyzed. Most country leaders are warning their citizens to steer clear of Nigeria in living talk less of having investment.
Furthermore, the fear of insecurity have grip the minds of the citizens living in the affected areas. Back in 2014, the deadly group entered a school in Chibok and kidnapped 276 school girls without facing challenges from security operatives. According to information gathered, the Nigerian military were given prior notice 4 hours to the attack, but they failed to send reinforcements to protect the students. Before the Chibok kidnapping, the deadly sect attacked the Giwa military barrack in which captured militants were freed. Can you imagine all these in a sovereign state.
To add more injuries to the woes, on May 4, 2014; the self-acclaimed leader of the group Abubakar Shekau declared in front of camera in a video posted on YouTube that ‘ I will sell your girls in the market, I am going to marry out any woman who is twelve years old, and if she is younger, I will marry her out at the age of nine. You are all in danger. I am the one who captured those girls and will sell all of them. Slavery is allowed in my religion, and I shall capture people and make them slaves. We are on our way to Abuja and we shall also visit the South. I am going to kill all the Imams and other Islamic clerics in Nigeria because they are not Muslims since they democracy and constitution. It is Allah that instructed us, until we soak the ground of Nigeria with Christian’s blood, and so-called Muslims contradicting Islam. We will kill and wonder what to do with their smelling corpses. This is a war against Christians and democracy and their constitution’. All of these were deliberately said because he knows that the country is loose in terms of security.
Conclusively, not only that the activities of the deadly sect have reduce the economy to ruin, it also reduce human resources. Every sectors have been paralyzed. The incessant bombings, killings and kidnappings has depopulate the affected areas. People are moving to South-West for fear of being killed. The South-West is now over populated and this lead to overpopulation, dilapidation of infrastructural facilities that have been put in place, deforestation and so on. With Boko Haram destroying here and there, I don’t think Nigeria can join the league of highly developed countries of the world.1
