African renaissance is the belief that African people and culture shall overcome the current challenges facing the continent and achieve cultural, scientific and economic renewal. The African renaissance is a philosophical and political movement to end the violence, corruption, colonial mentality and poverty that seems to plague the African continent, and replace them with a more just and equitable order. Before African renaissance can be achieve, Africans needs to overcome their differences to unite, they need to encourage education and change their thinking towards their heritage (Colonial mentality). African renaissance is the road to salvation from imperialism, want , poverty and disease.
CHALLENGES OF AFRICAN RENAISSANCE
- Colonial mentality.
- Inferiority complex.
- Lack of democracy.
- Tribalism and nepotism.
- Death of indigenous African language.
- Inter-African wars.
- Lack of knowledge of Africa’s past and present.
- Square pegs round holes.
One of the most fundamental challenges confronting the African renaissance is that most Africans does not believe in home grown solutions to problems. According to Leopold Sedar Senghor of Senegal, he said “The gravest form of imperialism is cultural imperialism, because it obscures awareness and renders the victims, the colonized incapable of independent thought”. There is no chance in African renaissance if Africans still continues to believe in foreign approach instead of generating original thoughts or ideas in solving problems.
The belief of Africans is that they are inferior to people from other parts of the world, especially to Europeans and North Americans. African renaissance can never be achieve with this inferiority complex in us.
Corruption is another challenges ravaging the African continent. Corruption as it is serves as an impediment to a nation’s growth. In most African nations, everyone steals from each other. Government officials steals from the nation’s purse, even the citizens steals among themselves. And as the case is, all of them are losers because they steal from themselves.
Lack of democracy
Electocracy is what is what is being practiced in most African countries or better still, we call it ‘Cracy-demo’. There is no government at the grassroots. With this, how will the government carries the govern along with what is happening in the country. This another challenges facing the growth of Africa.
Tribalism and nepotism
The issue of tribalism and and nepotism is another hiccup jeopardizing the growth and development of Africa. Any government in power rule in favor of their people – family, friends, relatives and so on by giving them jobs, appointing them for ministerial position while other people are there craving. Any official positions in most African countries is from father to son and relatives. The issue of tribalism and nepotism must be tackled before African renaissance.
Death of indigenous African language
Our indigenous language that has been abolished is another problem hindering the success of Africa. The traditional knowledge is been replace with the colonial ones. The younger generations doesn’t value indigenous language anymore and for any development in a nation, indigenous language plays a vital role. People will communicate in their native tongues. Foreign language has wiped away indigenous language in our mouth, to even pray to God in our own native dialect is also a problem.
Waging war against ourselves within the same territory is one of the challenges of African renaissance. Different ethnic group poses as threat to each other killing and fighting without any actual or tangible cause. Aside that, hatred is another obstruction of African renaissance. For example, the killings of other Africans especially Nigerians in South-Africa. What is the killings for? Only God can tell. The menace of Boko Haram is another example. Election can also serve as source of conflict within individual nations. For African renaissance to be achieved, we need to address these poser before us.
Terrorism is another component hindering African renaissance. Taking a good look into some of African countries, terrorism is the order of the day. Most terrorist in some African countries doesn’t have a justifiable cause, some of them took up this because of their belief and ideology. No government actions can curb the situation of terrorism because they want to compel others to their own belief which won’t work. Let me sight Boko Haram as an example, the will of the sect can never be achieve because of the unjustifiable cause they are fighting for (Putting and end to Western education) . This cannot happen. Aside Boko Haram, other groups also operate in another part of Africa like the Al-Shabaab and so on. We will continue to strive for African renaissance if a measure is not put in place to curb the nefarious activities of terrorist.
Lack of knowledge of Africa’s past and present
How can there be a tomorrow without a yesterday?. We can never know where we are going if we do not know where we are coming from. This is one of the challenges of African renaissance. Most African countries doesn’t know the past not to talk of future of Africa.
Square pegs round holes
African renaissance can never be achieved if the right people are been put in a wrong position to work i.e. Engineers performs or work as a lawyer. This is so common in Africa. The purpose of we doing this is to gain meaningful employment and also to acquire more income because of our own selfish interest. If this should continue to happen, Africa can never get to its promise land.0
