Before I will write further on this topic, I would like to define the three core words in this topic with the aid of Oxford Advanced Learners dictionary (International students edition) 7th edition.
AFRICAN: A person from Africa, especially a black (Page 25).
DIASPORA: The movement of people from any nation or group away from their country (Page 403).
FUTURE: The time that will come after the present or the events that will happen then (Page 608).
The African diaspora are the communities in any part of the world that have resulted by descent from the movement of black people (People’s of Africa), predominantly to the Americas and other areas around the globe. According to African Union, African diaspora are the group of people of African origin living outside the continent, irrespective of their citizenship and nationality and who are willing to contribute to the development of the continent and building of African union.
According to statistics, about 95% of Haitian population are from Africa, Haiti has also been member of African Union. Aside from Haiti, other countries like United Kingdom, France, Italy, United States of America, Australia and Latin America also have some Africans living in their country. If all these Africans should come back to their land for African Renaissance, Africa at large will be among the superpowers of the world.
The problem of African diaspora is that whenever they migrate from their country of origin to settle in another country and start to integrate in their new environment, they will abandon and forget the ties they have with their country of origin. Though, most of Africans diaspora did not migrate willingly to another country but being subject of ridicule and slavery. Another issue of diaspora in Africa is the socio-economic and political situation of African countries.
Basically, Africans in diaspora are doing great things in the outside world. The skilled and the unskilled ones are making names for themselves. Many of them have made their names to be known as inventors, economist; scholars and authors, artists, politicians and activists. People like Martin Luther King Jr, Barack Obama, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and so on histories can be trace to Africa. They are of African descent.
More so, it will take days and nights probably months to trace African diaspora. The truth about this matter is, if blacks in countries like U.S.A, France, Germany, Italy and other parts of Europe and Asia return to their ancestral route, what would remain of them? Nothing. Truth be told, Africa at large are superpowers only if the technocrats in diaspora return to their homeland to invest, innovate, educate and renovate Africa with the knowledge they have acquired there for African renaissance.
In addition, African renaissance should have started in the 20th century but due to some challenges, it wasn’t achieved. Though, African Union (A.U) are trying their best to make this happen. For this to be achieve, African leaders need to tackle the challenges facing African renaissance which are as follows;
- Tribalism and nepotism.
- Colonial mentality.
- Inferiority complex.
- Inter African wars and so on.
If all these challenges can be tackled, African renaissance will definitely come to pass. It will be beneficial for we Africans even the Europeans and Americans because, they will surely leave their country of origin to settle in Africa like we did after the proclamation of Africa’s glory.
In conclusion, different approach are been used by African Union to achieve this by holding meetings with African in foreign land. I will also credit former South–African president, Thabo Mbeki by organizing a committee that was able to convince the FIFA’s authorities to host the 2010 world cup which serve as a means of Pan–African movement. This is also to promote African Renaissance. The future is now for us to make Africa great. Africans in foreign land should be urge to return home in building great nations in Africa. The time starts now.1
